An English Lake District holiday park is proving a magnet for touring guests from Holland this year, thanks to its location in the heart of Cumbria's literary landscape.

Skelwith Fold Caravan Park in Ambleside says that it is receiving record numbers of bookings from Dutch touring caravan and motorhome owners for the coming summer.

One of the reasons, believes park director Henry Wild, is the worldwide focus on England following the recent royal wedding - and the desire to discover more about the country's greatest writers.

But is isn't just the towering figures of the Lake District's poets - such as Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey - which are providing the greatest pulling power.

Much-loved children's book author Beatrix Potter is also prompting many visitors to come and explore the parts of Cumbria which inspired some of her most famous tales.

Peter Rabbit, The Flopsy Bunnies, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Jemima Puddle-Duck are just some of the famous characters she brought to life with her prose and delightful illustrations.

But it is perhaps one of Beatrix Potter's most charming creations, Squirrel Nutkin, which has helped put Skelwith Fold on the map for visitors from Holland.

The descendants of the impish red squirrel, which she drew from real life, are now a feature on the 130-acre park thanks to a four-year project aimed at re-introducing their habitats.

The success of the scheme, which has seen red squirrels return to the grounds for the first time in decades, drew praise recently from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.

"We have been welcoming visitors from the Netherlands at Skelwith Fold for many years, but this is likely to be our busiest season for a very long while," said Henry.

"The royal wedding and the excellent value for money which this country now offers have, I suspect, both played their part in putting Britain back on the touring map.

"The Lake District offers not just England's most beautiful landscapes, but a chance to come closer to our literary heritage - and even to spot one of its most famous characters in our trees!" added Henry.
